This is a favourite vintage engagement session of late. Amber (my best friends) and her fiance Rob, had just returned from Paris, and wanted to capture this moment in their lives. Well on their way to planning their wedding, they wanted to take a breather and enjoy a few moments together. We try to create unique photos for every couple we shoot, and so when Rob divulged that he’s a huge Mad Men fan, and that him and his friends have a bi-monthly Mad Men scotch tasting party, we knew what we had to do.
We rented a motel room in Vanier (yes, you read that right), and set up a little scenario. An afternoon tryst between lovers. Rob waited for Amber to arrive with champagne, as he loosened his tie and sipped his scotch. We wanted to create something timeless and classic. Something really feminine and masculine at the same time. Photos that are just as much about the groom as they are about the bride. We think this vintage engagement session pulled it off.
If you’re in the midst of planning your own engagement session, take some time to think about what you want out of it. It’s really easy (and bordering on cliche) to just pick a random park and shoot there. What is it you and your fiance love doing? How do you want to remember yourselves? Are you engaged in an activity? Mountain climbing? Rowing a canoe? Or are you at home, cooking dinner and sipping wine in the backyard? A little bit of effort in figuring out what you want and how you wish remember this time will go a long way in creating truly unique photos.
