We were asked by our friend and planning colleague, Kim, if we would be interested in shooting a Quebec ice hotel wedding in Quebec City, we kinda looked at each other with amusement and intrigue. It didn’t initially sound like the kind of wedding we would be tagged for, but as the plan evolved and details emerged, a vision of the day started to materialize; a day that was steeped with emotion, glamour, fantasy, history, and a touch of Disney’esque magic.
Our bride, Melissa, had a very, very, clear vision of what she wanted her day to look and feel like. She and her husband, Jason, both from the New Jersey area were smitten with Quebec City probably because of how beautiful it is and how much it – especially the old part of town, built on a hill, surrounded by old fortified walls – looks like it was pulled from the pages of a brief for Beauty & The Beast (the song by the same name was played for their first dance, by the way). A short drive outside the city brought us the rural location that provided the cathedral – which was literally made of ice (they rebuild it every winter, in case you’re wondering) – where they exchanged their vows and were subsequently whisked away by horse and sled.
Upon our return to Quebec City, we entered la Musée de l’Amérique francophone (Franco-American Museum) where Kim and her team went above and beyond decorating this jaw-dropping, once-a-cathedral-turned-event-space into one of the most glorious locations we’ve ever had the pleasure of shooting at (in fact, just two short months later, we shot here again!). With its vaulted ceilings, wonderful decor, spotlight-galore lighting, it’s a beautiful venue even ‘bare-bones’, but when you’ve got people with a common vision and ample creativity, things can really get taken up a notch here.
Have you visited Quebec City before? A venue made of ice? Would you (or have you) embrace(d) the snow for a winter wedding? Even a Quebec ice hotel wedding? We’d love to hear about your experiences in the comments below.
