We normally stay away from doing too many ‘inspiration shoots’. As lovely as they are, they can sometimes mislead couples about what to expect on a wedding day. Real couples in love aren’t models, and real couples sometimes face less than perfect settings, weather conditions, the dreaded budget, and so many other factors that go into making their day ‘ideal’. That said – when Kirsty approached us to shoot a real couple, at a real estate, with some of our favourite vendors, we jumped at the chance, but only if we could ‘shoot like we normally would on a wedding day’. It’s tough to showcase what you can really do as a photographer at a styled shoot – because you can really control everything! You can ‘redo’ moments, you can ask for specific floral arrangement, you can take as long as you want. In order to showcase what we can do, we really wanted this day to feel & look like an authentic, intimate Quebec elopement.
We challenged ourselves to shoot this as closely as we would a real elopement – minimal if any do-overs, allowing vendors to create whatever they wanted without our input, and working with a real engaged couple – no models! Luckily, it rained too – we really had the chance to flex our creative muscles. So what can you expect from a duo like us on your wedding day? Minimal directing and involvement, and maximum creativity, storytelling (hopefully) an honest and romantic portrayal of a really beautiful day in your lives. When it comes to photographing weddings and elopements, we really hope our ‘footprint’ is as minimal as possible in your photos. We don’t want you to look at them and immediately see that we asked you to ‘touch your forehead and close your eyes’. We would rather help bring these situations out naturally and photograph these moments, without asking you to act the part. It’s your wedding day – its the one day that should be so genuine and so without pretending.
We couldn’t have created these lovely intimate Quebec elopement images without the help of our fine vendors, and Kirsty to plan it all (please check the links at the bottom of the post – some of the most incredible vendors in the Ottawa area). If you’re thirsty for more intimate elopement inspiration, check out some of our couples that did it for real: a 9 guest wedding in Ottawa, an intimate Chateau Montebello springtime wedding, and a sweet and teeny downtown Los Angeles wedding.
