“I’m a hugger!” That’s the first thing Shell & Daniel said to us when we ‘officially’ met, our hands extended, expecting a handshake. At this moment, we knew we were in for very warm and wonderful weekend for this Hilo Hawaii wedding.
Shell and Daniel’s wedding was as close to perfect as one could plan. Shell grew up in Hilo, and returned to her childhood home to celebrate this beautiful new chapter in her and Daniel’s life. Her family was so happy she chose their home for her nuptials that they added an extra large porch to the house just to be able to seat everyone for their big day.
The first thing you need to know about Hawaii (if you’ve never been) is the spirit of Aloha. It’s a beautiful word with all too many meanings, suffice it to say, it can also mean ‘you are welcome’. From the moment we set foot on the Big Island, we felt welcome.
Shell’s family was chatty, happy, and so eager to share their love for this beautiful mid-Pacific island. We stopped by their farm the day before the wedding and were immediately welcomed as friends. Their farm, covered in the most luscious greenery, is also adorned with grazing horses and cattle. Documenting a wedding is always a pleasure, but it’s extra exciting in surroundings like this.
Hilo is one of the rainiest cities in the US (even outranking Seattle) and as mother nature would have it, their wedding day was cloud covered. Luckily it didn’t rain until everyone was tucked under the tent for the reception. We’re so happy to have been part of this incredibly emotional, and welcoming Hilo Hawaii destination wedding, and grateful to Shell & Daniel for choosing us to begin with. We left already missing the spirit of aloha, and now that we’re home, its the little souvenir we’ve brought back with us: to be as welcoming to each an every person who walks through our door. A stranger is but a friend you haven’t met (or hugged).
