We’ve been trying to figure out a way to filter the weddings we shoot into a synopsis of photos; a succinct essay containing just 20 images, or so, but we’ve found that the exercise is truly impossible, especially when presented a day like Kira and Sebastien’s weekend wedding at the bride’s family home in Esterel, Quebec. There was so much to see, feel, and experience and truth be told, if we could share all the images from this weekend (whilst keeping your full attention), we probably would. This weekend is a perfect example of why you should certainly hire your photographer for more than just the day of the wedding, if possible; the visual narrative reveals itself (we hope) more fluidly and completely when we’re present to document the rehearsal dinner as well.
We arrived the day before the wedding to document the rehearsal and, frankly, managed to photograph some of our favorite, most spontaneous, real-feeling portraits yet. If you’re already familiar with how we approach photographing a wedding, you’ll remember that we’re rather ‘hands-off’ unless it’s absolutely necessary to ‘intervene’ (family photos and some formal portraiture, for example) and that we don’t turn the day into something that feels like a photo-shoot. We think that we managed to get just that; the beautiful spontaneity of summer rain, embraced by a couple who could care-less about getting wet; two people so expressively in love that it felt like we were photographing some kind of romantic movie.
Beyond the portraits, the intimate rehearsal dinner allowed us to really get to know their friends and families, photograph speeches, and build that sweet rapport that allows us to forgo intros and transitions on the wedding day itself.
This wedding was such a lovely gift to photograph due to the wonderful people involved. A HUGE thank you to Elyna for designing and planning every spectacular detail, and a HUGE thank you to Kira and Seb for being present in the moments, and for your expressive love language. Congratulations!!
This wedding was photographed on Medium Format with Phase One, Fujifilm Digital, and 35mm Film
