A few years ago we made the jump into the terrifyingly uncertain realm of full-time destination wedding photography. There’s few things that can conjure up queasy feelings than quitting a good, secure(ish) job and jumping into self-employment. That was 2013, and though we still feel that we’re constantly navigating unchartered waters, 2015 blessed us with a sense of confidence, some security, beautiful travels, and wonderful clients. Cautiously optimistic and always waiting for that proverbial rug to be pulled out from under our shoes, we’ve nonetheless resolved to stand up a little straighter, embrace momentum, and go confidently towards 2016.
It’s hard to sum up what a year means to you. 2015 was our first full year as newlyweds. It was full of beautiful ups and gut-wrenching lows.
One of the hallmarks of success in wedding photography, it seems, is getting to photograph interesting destinations. Beyond the jaw-dropping backdrops, exotic hotels, and foreign car rentals, there’s a beautiful, loving union. The core of the event. Our reason to be there. It remains the quiet centre of the sound and light show swirling around it. It’s from this quiet centre that the truly beautiful scenes unfold; the father of the bride, too emotional to sit with the small crowd, watching as his daughter becomes the new light of another man’s life; a groom wiping away his tears after reading a note from his soon-to-be bride; a bride and her maids holding hands and reciting a small prayer before that walk down the aisle; even mother proudly placing a veil upon her daughter’s head. A wedding day means so much to so many involved and no matter what the location, we’re so honoured to be invited, to capture, even if only for a few days – or a few hours.
We shot a record number of weddings this year with most of them being in the Ottawa area – our home base. To all the couples who chose us – those wonderful brides and grooms who brightened our days each and every time with their enthusiasm, contagious happiness, and by putting their trust in us to deliver for them – thank you, infinitely. To the amazing planners, coordinators, and venues – Elise, Sylvie, Noah, Jessica, Stephanie + Steve, Rachel, Yoleine, Delphine, Kirsty, Michele, Shannon, Stacy + Erin, Julie, Amanda, Betty + Silvio, Amy + Jen and so many more we’ve had the honour of working with time and time again – thank you for an incredible year!
2015 was also a great year for meeting new colleagues and reconnecting with old ones. The photography community in Ottawa, Los Angeles and internationally is a beautiful one, full of passionate people, storytellers and creators of meaningful images. Thank you so much for your friendship and open-ness this year – we’re looking at you, Green Tea, Kerry Ford, Richard Clarke, Candice Zugich, Kym Dozois, Union11, Christian Lee, Paul Sanderson, Rebecca Rivera , and so many others – thank you so much for spending time with us – shooting us and allowing us to shoot you! We’re so excited to see how many new friends 2016 will bring!
Each of the photos below represents a ‘yes!’ moment, and we’ve assembled these as a collection of images dubbed ‘Our Favourites’ for the past year. These represent, literally, 0.0015% of the photos we actually shot this year alone. We hope you enjoy our tiny percentage of images from a glorious 2015. Thank you!
Some of our favourites of the year: Ace Hotel, Palm Springs, California | Locanda Rosa Rosae, Breda di Piave, Italy | Hotel Villa Belrose, St. Tropez, France | Malaparte, Toronto, Canada | The French Estate, Orange, California
