Is it just us, or are we becoming known for photographing rained-out weddings – and dare we say, we really love them. It’s a perfect metaphor for marriage – entering a storm, together, the unpredictability, but also the spontaneity, the beauty in the chaos, the romance.
Everyone has a reaction to rain, so much more so than sunshine. It becomes a perfect assignment for us as photographers – quickly having to scrap any pre-conceived ideas we may have had about how we were going to approach portraits or family photos, and that has become something we really love. I (Justyna) have ruined so many pairs of shoes while shooting in the rain – a worthwhile sacrifice to get the shot. At this point, autumn weddings in the north-east require a backup outfit to be left in the trunk of the car.
On to Chantal and Giancarlo’s beautiful Beatnik Hotel wedding in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. Their day was beautifully designed by Melanie at Fou D’Amour, with the mother of the groom graciously creating all the florals (and growing them herself too). Like most weddings in the past two years, this day may not have been exactly what Chantal and Giancarlo envisioned, but how you deal with wrenches thrown your way, paves your future. There is beauty in the chaos, and if you’re lucky enough to find someone to brave the storm with you, you’ve already won.
